Situated at the top of the Whitsundays, Bowen offers a veritable paradise to explore. The inner reef is just metres from many of Bowen's bays, within minutes of donning your snorkel you can be swimming above a rich environment of corals and fish. At low tide, walk towards the North Head Lighthouse and be amazed by the bountiful sea life - giant red starfish, feather stars and green sea turtles. With a rich diversity of local produce and seafood, Bowen is the perfect place to unwind.
Bowen's claim to fame is its beautiful array of pristine beaches. Surrounded by beautiful coastline, each beach has its own charm and offers something special for every visitor. Whether you are looking for your own secluded sanctuary, a place for some safe family swimming or snorkelling our beautiful coral reefs, you can find it here!
Bowen has some of the best fringing coral in Queensland just metres from the sandy shores. Snorkeling is as simple as hiring or bringing your own fins, snorkel and mask and walking straight off the beach.
Scuba divers will not be disappointed either. Horseshoe, Rose and Murray Bays are the most popular for diving from the mainland, where the depths are only six to seven metres.
A WW2 landing craft (the Barge) lies about 18 metres underwater off Queens Beach, and makes for an interesting dive.
A few times a year, during the winter months, Bowen’s daytime tides are low enough for visitors to walk to North Head Island and Queensland’s third oldest lighthouse. This unique experience takes walkers on a beautiful journey that not only celebrates the history of Bowen, but also the wonderful array of sea life that inhabits the shores of the bay.
